When the skin is wounded and tissue is removed, it can leave an atrophic scar. These scars are indented and pockmarks from chicken pox or acne are examples of atrophic scarring. The wound heals, but not enough tissue is created to restore an even surface. Atrophic scars can leave the skin permanently damaged without treatment. Most atrophic scars are caused by skin growths or infections. Viruses, moles, acne and other skin conditions can leave behind indented scars once the skin heals. There are different levels of atrophic scarring, from small icepick holes in the skin to boxcar and rolling scars that are larger and deeper. Instead of fading or “removing” atrophic scars, they need to be filled or smoothed by cosmetic treatments or surgery.
