The Latest in Hair Replacement and Restoration for Women

Hair transplant methods have advanced over the last few decades. The old “hair plugs” from decades ago have been replaced with follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) methods. Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, removes individual hair follicles without incisions or noticeable scarring, then transfers the follicles to the desired area. There are no strips of tissue removed or stitched – FUE hair transplants are virtually scarless and less invasive for discreet, natural-looking results that many women prefer. FUT hair restoration does remove strips of hair follicles through surgery, but it can be a better option for some patients.

This system is a pneumatic, automated medical instrument that precisely removes hair follicles with a punch and suction method without incisions. The automated technique can remove more follicles in less time, while preserving the hair for better transplantation results. The follicles are removed and moved to their new area on the scalp during the same procedure.

With FUE female hair transplant procedures, hundreds of hair follicles can be harvested from one area of the scalp or body and transferred to thinning spots on the scalp. Our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Lesley Rabach, can carefully and artfully insert the hair follicles in the right areas and position to create beautiful new hair. The individual follicle method offers a more precise option for restoring hair than strips used in the FUT method, without incisions, stitches or scarring.

What to Expect with FUE

The NeoGraft FUE hair transplant procedure is virtually painless, but the scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure the patient is comfortable. Due to the intricate nature of the hair restoration techniques, most hair transplant procedures require a few to several hours to complete. Patients can relax while their hair follicles are harvested and repositioned. Once the procedure is complete, there is minimal downtime or recovery required.

During the procedure, there are small punch holes placed in the scalp, but these holes heal quickly with no noticeable scars. Patients can quickly return to their normal activities. Over the next 3-4 months, new hair growth will begin. By months six through nine, the results become more noticeable as the hair fills out and becomes longer. You will be able to style and care for your hair naturally, since it is your own hair.

FUT Hair Restoration

The FUT hair restoration method uses incisions to remove a thin strip of hair follicles from a fuller area of the scalp to the balding or thinning area. FUT can transplant more follicles in a shorter amount of time, which makes it less expensive than FUE. For some patients, this may be a more desirable option than FUE.
