Brighten & Balance Your Complexion

Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes flat, brown, or gray-brown patches to appear on the skin. It typically shows up on the face, but it can appear anywhere on the body. Though chronic, melasma is generally harmless and occurs when pigment-producing cells become overactive and produce excess melanin. It’s often triggered by pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, sun exposure, genetics, or even harsh skincare products or medications.

When you come to LM Medical NYC, you can share your melasma experience with Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Morgan Rabach, who will help you find a treatment suitable for your condition.

What is Melasma Treatment?

There are several types of melasma treatments that can effectively remove melasma. Dr. Rabach also tailors the melasma treatment to the patient’s individual needs to ensure you see the most effective, long-lasting results.

Chemical peels resurface the skin by applying an acidic solution, which promotes the growth of a new, healthy layer of skin while stimulating collagen and elastin production beneath the skin. There are three strength levels, including light, medium, and deep peels, which indicate how deeply the solution penetrates the skin.

What to Expect on the Day of Melasma Treatment

You will return to our Downtown New York City clinic for your treatment session. Your skin should be clear and free of creams or makeup.

You will meet with Dr. Morgan Rabach and go over your treatment plan. You can ask any questions you’d like to help you feel more comfortable. When you are ready to begin the treatment, Dr. Rabach will apply a topical numbing solution to ensure your comfort.

Chemical peels are applied to the skin with a small brush, gauze, or cotton-tipped applicator and left on for several minutes to an hour, depending on the strength level, and will feel like a slight burning sensation. Laser and light treatments feel like a warming sensation. Microneedling will feel like sandpaper gliding over your skin or a prickling sensation.

When your treatment session is complete, you will likely notice some mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or temporary bruising, but you may otherwise return to regular activities.

Melasma Treatment Recovery

As you recover from your melasma treatment in Downtown New York City, you may notice some mild, tolerable redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising. You can return to regular activities the same day, but avoid sunlight to the treated areas and exercises that cause sweating, as your skin will be sensitive from the treatment.

Use any protective ointments provided by Dr. Rabach, wear sunscreen, and avoid harsh skincare cleansers. You can return to work the same day.

Combining My Melasma Treatment with Other Treatments

Many of our Downtown NYC patients combine their melasma treatment with other treatments to achieve further skin rejuvenation.

BOTOX and Wrinkle Relaxers

BOTOX, in addition to the melasma treatment, helps soften wrinkles, creases, and lines, creating a more youthful, relaxed complexion.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used to add or restore volume and reduce shadowing, creating a more lively, healthier appearance.
