Folliculitis

If you have hair on your body that is itchy, sore, or filled with pus, you may have folliculitis, a common skin condition where hair follicles become inflamed or infected. It typically looks like small, red, pimple-like bumps and can appear anywhere on the body where hair grows. It’s usually triggered by damage to the hair follicle, which makes it vulnerable to bacteria.

Dr. Morgan Rabach, a Board-certified dermatologist based in Downtown New York City, has over a decade of experience treating various skin conditions, including folliculitis. If you suspect you may have folliculitis, schedule a consultation with Dr. Rabach at LM Medical NYC to begin your folliculitis healing journey.

What is Folliculitis Treatment?

During your consultation at LM Medical NYC, Dr. Rabach will identify the underlying cause of your folliculitis, including bacterial, fungal, or inflammatory, before determining which treatment to move forward with. Folliculitis treatment options include topical gels and creams, oral antibiotics, or laser therapy, depending on your specific needs.

What to Expect on the Day of a Folliculitis Treatment

All of our treatments take place at our office in Downtown New York City, the same location as your consultation. If your treatment involves a prescription from Dr. Rabach, such as an ointment or oral pill, she will prescribe it during your consultation.

If your treatment includes laser therapy, Dr. Rabach will apply a numbing agent to the targeted areas. She will also give you protective eyewear to keep your eyes safe. The laser will feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin, and it will be slightly warm and prickly, but it should not cause pain.

The session will last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how many areas are being treated and the severity of the folliculitis.

The treated area will be red, slightly swollen, sensitive, and may have some bumps. You can otherwise resume regular activities.

Folliculitis Treatment Recovery

The recovery period from folliculitis treatment is very manageable. It involves keeping the skin happy with cool compresses, gentle cleansing, soothing topical creams, and avoiding exfoliating products.

Expect the treated area to have some mild redness, tingling, and tiny bumps for 1 to 2 days. The hair root will die and shed within one to three weeks, and the treated hairs will naturally shed out of the follicle.

Wear loose-fitting clothing to minimize friction, avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks, and avoid intense workouts, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 2 days.

Do not pick, scratch, or pop the bumps, as this can lead to infections. Do not shave the treated area until the bumps have subsided.

Combining My Folliculitis Treatment with Other Treatments

Folliculitis treatments can easily be combined with other treatments. Many of our New York City patients add other treatments to attack the infection from multiple angles.

IPL

Target unwanted hair and surface-level imperfections, such as sunspots, redness, and uneven texture, in one session. This combination maximizes aesthetic outcomes, streamlines recovery, and yields noticeable results in fewer total appointments.

Chemical Peel

Achieve comprehensive, widespread skin rejuvenation and firmer, healthier skin when you add a chemical peel. Chemical peels come in varying degrees of strength levels, which can be tailored to the severity of your folliculitis.
