Excisional Surgery

You’ve probably noticed at least one mole on your skin. These common spots, commonly known as moles, range in severity, with some being completely harmless and others being extremely concerning. You may also have a scar that bothers you, and you want it to be less noticeable. One of the most common ways to remove a scar, or a mole that is benign, pre-cancerous, or malignant, is excisional surgery.

At LM Medical NYC, Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Morgan Rabach has extensive training and experience in safely and efficiently removing these skin lesions. If you have a scar or mole that bothers you, or you are concerned about whether a mole may be dangerous, we invite you to read this page to learn more about excisional surgery and to book a consultation to get started on your treatment journey.

What is Excisional Surgery?

Excisional surgery is an aesthetic and cosmetic procedure that removes skin lesions by making incisions and excising them, along with a small amount of surrounding tissue. Cutting the surrounding tissue ensures that any atypical cells are removed in addition to the moles.

Removing a mole with excisional surgery can be used for moles that are completely harmless and simply bother you due to getting snagged on jewelry and clothing. They can also be pre-cancerous or cancerous and must be removed as soon as possible.

Scars are removed with excisional surgery with a specialized technique, in which you will still have a scar, but it will be less noticeable.

What to Expect on the Day of Excisional Surgery

Depending on the severity of the lesion, your excision surgery will either be the same day as your consultation at our New York City office or on a later date. Either way, it will begin with numbing the area with an agent or local anesthetic injection.

When the area has been numbed, Dr. Rabach will remove the scar or mole and a small margin of healthy surrounding skin utilizing specialized incision techniques, allowing for a smoother, flatter closure. For moles, the excised tissue is sent to a lab to ensure the margins are clear and do not contain any abnormal or cancerous cells.

Excisional Surgery Recovery

After your excisional surgery in New York City, you will notice some mild swelling, redness, tenderness, and soreness around the area after the numbing cream wears off.

To avoid complications and promote efficient healing, keep the area covered and moist for at least a few days. Avoiding strenuous exercise, swimming pools or hot tubs, tanning beds, and sweaty activities for about 1-2 weeks will also help you recover more smoothly.

You can return to work and daily activities the same day as your excisional surgery.

Combining My Excisional Surgery with Other Treatments

It may be beneficial for you to consider combining additional treatments with your excisional surgery to improve disease clearance, restore function, or enhance your aesthetic results.

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer screening involves comprehensive skin exams or cancer screenings to identify precancerous or cancerous markings. We recommend getting annual screenings to ensure long-term skin health and to be extra cautious.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing can help blend and soften the surgical scar into the surrounding skin, resulting in a smoother, more even skin texture and tone. This should be done after the scar has healed.
