Confidence Starts at the Hairline

Male Pattern Baldness

Hair loss and thinning tend to sneak up on men far sooner than expected. While wearing hats or getting strategic haircuts like buzz cuts or cropped fringes can temporarily hide thinning and baldness in the early stages, many men seek a long-term solution to their hair concerns.

At LM Medical NYC, Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rabach uses her expert eye to identify the stage of male pattern baldness her patients are at and the perfect procedure or treatment to help them restore their hair so that they can feel confident again.

What is a Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) is a form of hair loss that causes men to lose hair on the scalp and does not grow back. Male pattern baldness can show up as thinning or full hair loss on the crown and a hairline that gradually moves farther back on your head, often called a receding hairline. It differs from female pattern baldness, which generally causes thinning hair only at the top and crown of the head.

There are 7 stages of male pattern baldness:

Stage 1: You have little to no hair loss or hairline recession.

Stage 2: You have slight hair loss close to the skin between your ears and forehead (temples).

Stage 3: You have a deep hairline recession around the temples. Your hairline resembles the shape of an “M” or “U.”

Stage 4: There is significant hairline recession and loss of hair at the top of your head (crown).

Stage 5: Your hairline recession meets the bald spot at the top of your head.

Stage 6: Your hair between the temples and crown is thinning or completely gone.

Stage 7: The hair on the top of your head is gone, and only a thin band of hair around the side of your head remains.

FUE is an advanced, minimally invasive hair restoration procedure involving the gentle extraction of individual hair follicles from a donor area with fuller, healthier hair and transplanting them to areas that are thinning or balding. This is in contrast to other hair transplant techniques that extract a donor strip containing thousands of hair follicles and require large incisions. FUE is often chosen for its natural-looking results, minimal scarring, and fast recovery time.

  2. Dr. Rabach will examine your hair, scalp, and thinning and balding areas
  3. Go over your medical history, prior treatments, and medications
  4. Dr. Rabach will explain which procedures will best suit your goals and state of balding or hair thinning
  5. Ask any questions that come up
  6. Dr. Rabach will create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific hair restoration goals and stage of male pattern baldness.

What to Expect on the Day of a Male Pattern Baldness Treatment

Your male pattern baldness procedure will be at our clinic in Downtown NYC. Depending on which procedure you get, you will be at the office anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours.

Oral and topical treatments are prescribed during your consultation, and you can pick them up at a pharmacy or buy them online and take/apply them at home. Dr. Rabach will tell you how to use/apply them and what the dosage entails.

Minimally invasive treatments, such as microneedling and PRP injections, involve a 30- to 60-minute, virtually painless treatment session at our Downtown New York City office, using the techniques explained above.

FUE and FUT use local anesthetic before any incisions or extractions are made to ensure you are comfortable and don’t feel any pain. During FUE, Dr. Rabach carefully harvests individual follicles from the donor area using a specialized NeoGraft device and places them into small incisions in the thinning or balding area. During FUT, Dr. Rabach carefully harvests a thin strip of scalp from the donor area and carefully dissects it under a microscope to separate individual follicular units. Then, Dr. Rabach places these follicular units into small incisions in the balding and thinning areas and closes the incisions with sutures.

A red light therapy session takes about 25 minutes. You will wear a specialized helmet and put on protective goggles while a panel emits red light onto your scalp to stimulate dormant hair follicles. The session does not cause any pain and can even be relaxing.

Male Pattern Baldness Treatment Recovery

Recovery from a male pattern baldness treatment varies depending on which treatment you get. While non-invasive treatments don’t have any downtime, minimally invasive and surgical procedures involve some swelling, itching, and mild tenderness for a few days to a week. If you had sutures placed during FUT, you will need to return to Downtown NYC to have them removed after 7 to 10 days.

You can return to normal activities within 1 to 2 days, but avoid activities that involve excessive sweating for at least 1 week, as sweat can increase the risk of infection and irritation.

It’s important to remain patient throughout the recovery process, as hair grows slowly and in cycles, so your results may worsen before improving.

Combining My Male Pattern Baldness with Other Treatments

Many patients combine multiple male pattern baldness treatments with each other, depending on which stages of balding they are at. Combining treatments is an effective way to stimulate hair growth from multiple angles, increase efficiency, and provide superior results. During your consultation at our Downtown NYC office, you will discuss which procedures can be combined for the most effective results.
