How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoos are considered permanent because they contain molecules of ink that are too large to be absorbed by the body and stay suspended in the skin. Energy-based lasers can break apart the tattoo ink molecules within the skin into smaller particles. The body’s immune system then is able to remove those particles from the skin and absorb them into the body’s elimination system. Different wavelengths of laser light are used to treat different colors of ink. Blue or black ink responds well to laser treatment, as these colors absorb most wavelengths.

Over a series of laser therapy sessions, the tattoo will slowly fade with each laser treatment until it is no longer visible.

What to Expect on the Day of Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment

On the day of your laser tattoo removal treatment, your tattoo will be cleansed and prepped for treatment, and you will be given safety goggles to protect your eyes for the duration of the therapy. LM Medical NYC will also be able to provide topical numbing gel or local anesthesia to ease any discomfort you might feel during the tattoo removal. Dr. Morgan will then explain the laser wavelength settings she will use to address your tattoo’s various colors and sizes. When you are ready, the laser will deliver light pulses on your tattoo, which will help break up the ink particles. After the first treatment, the tattoo should appear slightly lighter in color. Tattoo removal therapy will take several weeks, depending on the size and color of the tattoo, until the tattoo is fully removed.

Laser Tattoo Removal Recovery

Following your laser tattoo removal session, you will be given an ice pack to soothe the skin. You may also need to apply antibacterial ointments to prevent infection until your next tattoo removal session. Please follow the provided aftercare instructions and avoid sun exposure. Dr. Morgan recommends covering the tattoo with a bandage to avoid irritating the area during regular activities.
