How Long Do the Effects of Facial Fillers Last?

Facial filler injections can transform the face, and many even offer immediate results in a quick treatment. Most contain hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring substance that adds volume to the skin. Whether you want to smooth lines on your face or add fullness to your lips or cheeks, dermal fillers can be a wonderful solution. While facial fillers can enhance your facial features, they are temporary, and the effects can vary in how long they last, depending on the type.

Juvederm Facial Fillers

Juvederm® facial fillers are hyaluronic acid-based, and there are different formulas to address different areas on the face. Juvederm products vary from small particle options for adding volume to the lips to firmer fillers for lifting or contouring the face, like Voluma™. The effects of Juvederm can last about a year for some formulas, but Voluma can last up to two years before the treatment needs to be repeated.

Radiesse Injections

Radiesse® dermal filler injections have dual effects with their ability to fill lines and wrinkles with immediate results, but they also stimulate collagen production. Radiesse is made from tiny calcium-based microspheres that are in a water-based gel. The microspheres create immediate volume to smooth lines and folds (smile and lip lines), while also inducing collagen in the skin. Results can last for a year or more.

Restylane Dermal Fillers

Restylane® is another hyaluronic acid facial filler product line that is popular for many different cosmetic treatments. Restylane has formulas designed for delicate areas like the lips, as well as an FDA-approved formula for hand rejuvenation. The effects of Restylane facial fillers last from six months for some treatments and up to 18 months for others.

Sculptra Injections

Sculptra® injections do not have the instant results of most facial fillers, but the results can last much longer than others. Sculptra uses poly-L-Latic acid (PLLA) which stimulates collagen in the skin to add volume to sunken temples or cheeks. It can take 4-6 weeks for results to be apparent, but many patients see the benefits for 2-3 years after their injections.

Bellafill Injections

Bellafill® injections are the longest lasting facial filler. Bellafill uses polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres in a collagen gel that can smooth smile lines or scars. The injections create instant volume to smooth lines or scars. Then, the microspheres act as a scaffolding to build more collagen in the skin. The results have consistently lasted 5 years.
