FUT hair restoration changed the way hair transplants were performed. The old method of removing a tuff of hair and “plugging” them into a new area was improved with follicular unit transplantation (FUT). This method uses a surgical incision to remove a thin strip of hair follicles from a dense area on the scalp, usually in the back of the head. The hair follicles are separated into small groups of follicular units, usually with up to four hairs, which are transplanted to the desired area of the scalp.

FUT hair restorations can transplant up to 5,000 units in one session. This is an efficient method of hair restoration that takes less time than other methods like follicular unit extraction, or (FUE). There is an incision made that will leave a thin scar from the area where the follicles are harvested, but this scar can usually be easily hidden. Once healed, there is usually no visible evidence of the hair transplant procedure.

During the procedure, the scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic. A thin strip of hair follicles and scalp tissue is removed, then the incision is sutured closed. The hair strip is separated into the desired units – patients can relax while this process is completed. Once the follicle units are prepared, they are inserted into the desired area to create a natural flow and appearance. Most patients can return to most normal activities the next day.
