HPV Virus Treatment
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is estimated to affect 90% of men and 80% of women during their lifetime. This is a sexually-transmitted disease that comes in different strains – about 100 – and many of these strains are asymptomatic with no symptoms. However, about 40 strains can result in symptoms, including genital warts. Our dermatology team at LM Medical NYC offers HPV virus treatment, including genital wart removal, at our clinic in Manhattan.
HPV is linked to genital warts and a higher risk for cervical cancer. Using safe sex practices can help reduce the risk of getting HPV. There is also an HPV vaccine that can reduce the risk of contracting the types of HPV that cause genital warts or are linked to cancer. However, the vaccine requires a series of three shots that should be given to adolescents before they become sexually active. While the vaccine is reducing cases of HPV and genital warts, there are many teens and adults who were not vaccinated and obtain genital warts.
Genital Wart Removal
For those who have contracted HPV and genital warts, there are treatment options. Once you have HPV, there is not a cure, but if you have genital warts, they can be removed. There are multiple treatments that can be used for genital wart removal, either at a clinic or with self-administered treatments. Laser treatments, liquid nitrogen and excision wart treatments can be performed at a clinic, while self-administered medications include topical options patients can apply themselves.
If you have genital warts caused by HPV, there are options for treatment or removal.
