Introduction

Introduction to IPL PhotoFacial

IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment targets red and brown spots while smoothing skin’s texture. Over-the-counter and even prescription-grade skin care can only do so much to address skin conditions such as acne or rosacea or improve the look of brown spots from sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

These discolorations in the skin can be effectively treated through IPL treatments or photofacials. These treatments are an excellent option for patients looking for results with minimal downtime.e. We also sometimes recommend patients “laser stack” an IPL PhotoFacial with another energy-based laser to maximize skin benefits, address multiple skin issues, and reduce total downtime. LM Medical NYC offers IPL facial rejuvenation treatments at our Upper East Side and Greenwich Village clinics. Please inquire with our care team and continue reading to learn how this technology can help you reach your skin goals.

What is an IPL PhotoFacial?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are a type of laser therapy that can diminish redness in the skin while improving tone and texture. IPL uses light energy that penetrates deep into the layers of the dermis, but it does not damage the epidermis or surface of the skin. The light is attracted to the darker pigmentation of capillaries and other discolorations, removing the targeted redness from the skin. Since the light energy does not affect the skin’s surface, little to no downtime is needed after treatment.

IPL treatments may not be suitable for patients with darker skin tones. This is because certain IPL devices have limited ability to differentiate between naturally dark skin and dark skin due to damage or discoloration. Please schedule a consultation to learn more about whether an IPL treatment may be right for you.

If you agree with your treatment plan, you can begin your treatments that day or schedule your first treatment at a later, more convenient time.

What to Expect on the Day of an IPL PhotoFacial Treatment

When you arrive for your IPL photofacial treatment, our staff will carefully cleanse and prep your skin for treatment and provide you with safety goggles, which you will wear for the duration of the treatment. Dr. Morgan will review the targeted areas for treatment on your skin with you. When you are ready, she will use the IPL device to target the specified areas discussed during your consultation. You may feel a tingling or stinging sensation as the light energy pulses and penetrates the deeper layers of your skin.

Depending on the extent of the treatment area, it will take less than an hour. Afterward, you may return to work or home and resume your daily schedule!

IPL PhotoFacial Recovery

Following your IPL photofacial treatment, your skin may be reddish and slightly sensitive after the treatment. Over the next one to two weeks, pigmented cells will come to the surface and flake away. Please take care to avoid sun exposure and wear protective sunscreen during this time, as your skin may be more sensitive to sun damage.
