What Is Follicular Unit Extraction?

Hair transplant procedures have changed with the use of the follicular unit extraction, or FUE, method. In the past, hair transplants required incisions and sutures to remove hair from one area of the scalp to another. The strips of hair follicles were removed, leaving linear scars and stitched in place, creating more scarring. FUE is a non-surgical technique that removes individual hair follicles without incisions, stitches or scarring.

NeoGraft follicular unit extraction (FUE) for hair transplant is an innovative option for restoring lost hair. The process uses a pneumatic, automated device that removes hair follicles from one area and transplants it to the desired area on the scalp. The process uses a punch and suction technique that preserves the hair follicle for improved results when the follicle is transplanted. No incisions are made in the skin, only a small hole when the follicle is removed and transplanted. The holes heal quickly, and no visible scar remains.

NeoGraft Hair Transplant Experience

NeoGraft hair transplant procedures are minimally-invasive and not painful. Patients are awake during the procedure – a local anesthetic is used on the scalp to ensure there is no discomfort. The efficient system allows for hundreds of follicles to be harvested quickly then transferred to the desired area. Dr. Lesley Rabach, our facial plastic surgeon, carefully inserts the hair follicles into the scalp to create thicker, fuller hair.

The FUE hair transplant procedure usually requires four to eight hours to complete. There is minimal downtime required after hair restoration. Patients can expect to see new hair growth in about 3-4 months after their procedure, with noticeably thicker hair appearing beyond six months. The new hair can be styled, cut and maintained like the rest of your natural hair.
