Prominent Ear Deformity Correction
Protruding or prominent ears are a common trait, usually passed down through genetics. When a child is born, it is usually obvious if their ears extend outward or protrude from the head. Prominent ear deformity usually does not impact the health or hearing of the child, but protruding ears are a distracting feature. Many parents choose prominent ear deformity correction to give their child a more balanced appearance.
At LM Medical NYC, our double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Lesley Rabach, can recommend treatment for pediatric protruding ear correction. In some cases, infants with mild forms of prominent ear deformity can undergo ear molding in the first two months after birth to reshape their ears. This is a non-surgical, non-invasive option that can reshape the cartilage while it is still flexible. For children with more pronounced or projected ears, otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, can be performed when they are older.
Otoplasty or Ear Pinning for Kids
Ear pinning surgery can be completed on children once their ears have completed their growth cycle. For most children, this is around age five or six. Dr. Lesley is highly experienced at performing this surgery on both adults and children. As a mother herself, she is experienced with children and helping them feel comfortable. The procedure can bring the ears closer to the scalp, reducing the protrusion. Many parents choose to have this procedure completed before their child begins elementary school to reduce the teasing and bullying that can occur when a child looks different.
