Scar Revision Plastic Surgery

Any wound to the skin can cause scar tissue to form. While scar tissue does help heal a wound, it does not have the same appearance as the skin it replaces. Jagged, deep, large or raised scars on the face can be disfiguring. Scar tissue is more rigid than normal skin, reducing its flexibility with facial muscle movement. While most facial trauma injuries are treated by an emergency physician, they are solely concerned with the treatment of the injury, not the aesthetics of the face. The resulting scar can restrict facial movement and change the appearance of the face. To restore the movement and aesthetics of the face, scar revision plastic surgery or treatment may be needed.

Facial Scar Correction

There is no way to completely remove a scar; any wound to the skin will leave some scar tissue and evidence behind. However, facial scar revision surgery or treatment can be used to minimize the appearance and improve facial movement. For mild to moderate scars that do not restrict muscle movement, treatments like laser therapy may reduce their appearance. For deeper scars, plastic surgery may be needed to release restricted muscles or tendons and remove excessive scar tissue. Depending on the severity of the scar, skin grafts and other advanced techniques could help restore the form and function of the face.
