What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are small, thin blood vessels that appear close to the skin’s surface, often forming web-like patterns. They are typically red, blue, or purple and most commonly occur on the legs or face. While generally harmless, spider veins can sometimes cause discomfort, such as mild aching or itching, especially after standing for long periods.
These veins develop when valves inside the veins weaken and allow your blood to flow backward and pool, causing the veins to enlarge and become visible. Genetics, age, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, and sun exposure can all contribute to their appearance.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that typically appear on the legs and feet. They occur when the valves inside the veins fail, causing blood to pool. This buildup creates pressure, leading to the veins becoming swollen, raised, and visibly bulging beneath the skin.
Varicose veins can appear blue, purple, or flesh-colored and may be accompanied by symptoms like aching, heaviness, swelling, or cramping in the legs. While often a cosmetic concern, they can sometimes indicate underlying circulation issues. Contributing factors include genetics, age, pregnancy, obesity, and prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
