Torn Earlobe Repair
Torn earlobes are the most common ear injuries. The prevalence of ear piercing has resulted in many people experiencing earrings that stretch the earlobe or are ripped through the tissue. A torn earlobe can be disfiguring and distracting, but it can also be repaired. At LM Medical NYC, we offer torn earlobe repair to reform damaged ears at our clinics in Manhattan.
The earlobe is made from soft, fatty tissue. It is different from the rest of the exterior ear that contains mostly cartilage. The earlobe is easily pierced and heals quicker than the upper portions of the outer ear. It is also prone to stretching and elongating, due to aging and other factors. Heavy earrings, dwindling collagen levels and gravity can result in stretched piercings. Over time, earrings can eventually tear through the bottom of the earlobe or be torn through due to trauma. This can leave a torn earlobe divided into two sections.
Earlobe Plastic Surgery
When an earlobe is torn into two separate pieces, plastic surgery can be performed to repair and reshape the earlobe. Torn earlobe repair is performed with local anesthetic and in our office on an outpatient basis. First, the skin needs to be removed between the two sections to allow the tissue to heal together. The sections are then stitched together, and the skin is formed around the new whole earlobe. The tissue and skin must be allowed to completely heal before the ear can be pierced again, if desired.
